Brosius co-Athlete of Year in region;
Franklin's Knight named to D-10 team

No  state or district winners here, but four-time  champion Oil City dominated the Region 3 boys track all-stars, announced Wednesday by the Erie Times News.

Leading the way was solid senior distance runner Elijah Brosius who shared co-Athlete of the Year honors with Corry's  state hurdles champion, Blake Cook.

Brosius made first team in the 1600 and 3200 and the 3200 relay where he teamed with Elijah Collins and two underclassmen -- junior Keegan Kirkwood and freshman Rilee Matalino.

Senior teammate De'Vaughn Griffin, who saw limited action as the season waned, made first team in two events in voting by the coaches -- the 100 and 200 -- and second team in the 400 relay with even more underclassmen -- freshmen Carter Thompson and Morris Woodhouse  and soph Dylan VanWormer.

The only local District 10 pick was Franklin super soph Logan Knight, but he settled for second team on the region all-stars behind Meadville's Brennen Dinsmore in the shot and Titusville sophomore Lane Ongley in the discus.

Franklin's only  region first teamer was veteran Jay Prettyman in the 800.

Oil City had two more first team selections in Clae Thompson in the high jump and the 1600 relay of junior Chase Crosmun, VanWormer, Kirkwood and Woodhouse.

Van Wormer also made second team in the 400 and 300 hurdles.

Franklin's Landon Lynch was second team in the javelin (to Corry state champ Nolan Carey) and the high jump.

Other Knight second team picks were Prettyman in the 1600, Gauge Gierlach in the 3200, soph Caden Mincer in the 110 hurdles, and the 1600 relay of Jackson Wilson, Landen Carter, Mincer and Prettyman.

Griffin, Peterson on D-10 girls track stars

Although neither was picked to the All-Region 3 first team, Franklin's Isabel Griffin and Isabella Peterson were named to the District 10 girls track all-stars, announced Thursday by the Erie Times News.

Griffin, a junior, was selected  to the All-Region second team in the 3200 by league coaches. She won the 3A crown in that event. Meadville junior Megan Puleio who was tabbed the region's Athlete of the Year, claimed the district 3A titles in the 800 and 1600 and bested Griffin head-to-head in the 3200 during the dual meet between the two schools.

Peterson was a sort-of surprise winner in the D-10 3A discus; tops in Region 3 weights is senior Lindsay Hasbrouck from champ Corry, a 2A school as are Oil City and Titusville.

Franklin had one other athlete honored: freshman Lilyan Miller, second team in the 200.

Sophomore Corabel Shiley led a strong and young  Oil City contingent. She was second team in the 800 and 1600 and on the first team 3200 relay with two more 10th graders, Isabella Vorse and Addison Wyant, along with freshman Meredith Best.

In addition to the relay, Oil City had five more first-team selections, all underclassmen: junior Sophia Garmong in the 400, sophs Bailey Stevens in the 300 hurdles and Madison Garland in the javelin, and freshman Olive Collins in the 100 hurdles and high jump. Junior Lindsay Caralla was second team in the high jump. The Lady Oilers were third in R-3, losing to MASH by a point.

ABOUT THIS SITE

If you are from Anywhere, USA, and happened to stumble upon this site, Franklin and Oil City are about eight miles apart along Route 8 in Venango County, Pa. -- which is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie in the western part of the state.

yardsandpoints.com (formerly venangofootball.com and then route8rivalry.com) covers the grid doings of Oil City and Franklin high schools in Venango County. It also includes the football histories of the two schools, which date back to 1896, along with that of (RIP) Venango Catholic (nee Christian and formerly St. Joseph in Oil City), which dropped the sport in the 1990s. I've recently included more stuff on basketball as well as the doings in other sports.
