Wenner claims second medal in pole vaulT, but
Kolesar, relay, knight go home empty-handed

Cranberry's 3200 relay didn't make it back to the medal stand on a dreary Saturday morning at Shippensburg, finishing 10th in this year's race, but sophomore Darien Wenner made her way back and as the rain poured down, accepted the sixth-place medal in the pole vault.

Meanwhile, it was another disappointment for Franklin junior weight man Logan Knight, who was deprived of a medal for the second straight year -- and fourth event -- this time, when he was beaten out for eighth place in the 3A discus on someone else's final throw.

The Berries took the bronze last year in the relay, but a second straight in that event was not to be. Elena Ishman, Navy Perry, Wenner and Beatrice Kolesar finished 10th in 9:50.89 -- a time that was close to their best this season. Top-seeded Hughesville did not disappoint, winning the race in 9:23.39.

While all this was going on, Wenner was competing in the pole vault, and doing very well after finishing seventh last season.

Wenner got off to a rocky start, failing to clear 9-6 on her first try, but made her next jump -- and then the next two on her first attempts when she had to leave for the relay. She was facing 11 feet at the time. When she returned, she cleared it on her first attempt, and by that time only six people were left in the competition. But Wenner missed her three tries at 11-6, her school record height.

Meanwhile, the big girls/guns, led by Grove City's Aleah Morganti, were taking over the event, working on the 12-foot barrier when Wenner was eliminated. Morganti cleared 13 feet to win the gold.

Kolesar was in the open 3200 two hours before the relay. She was seeking her second straight medal after taking sixth last year. Oil City's Corabel Shiley was also in the race, but neither local runner did as well as they did last spring -- place-wise or time-wise.

Kolesar ran 11:04.42 for ninth place -- just out of the money since the top eight medal. She ran a school record 10:58.44 when she medaled last season.

Shiley finished 19th in 11:49.03, some 30 seconds off the time she ran at states in 2025 when she was 12th. It was also 37 seconds off her school record. Maybe the rain had something to do with all this. It was not pleasant out there.

But it didn't seem to hamper Baylee Espinosa of Lewisburg, who repeated as champion. Her time was 10:33.05, which was better than her top seed (10:39.06.)

Knight's bid for medal foiled again

Knight was clinging to eighth place, and the final medal spot, by six inches over Drew Hopper of Carlisle, 159-5-158-11. His sixth and final throw spun just 149-10. (He had a chance to extend his lead right there, but would have had to be close to his best throw ever, as it turned out.) Up came Hopper who answered with 164-11 to overtake Knight.

Knight's 159-5 came on his fourth throw after two fouls. He opened at 158-8. Knight broke the school record on May 16 with a 167-7, but that only would have been good enough for fifth place in this state meet.

Grove City's DeLathian Boanes was second with a 172-4 see-ya-later throw before he takes his football and track talents to Slippery Rock. The champion, Grayson Pittman of Avon Grove, threw 187-11 on his first try and then proceeded to rack up five straight fouls.

Knight also finished ninth last year in the shot, but did nothing in the discus. This season it was just the opposite. So, back to the drawing board for  his senior campaign.

Wenner 11th in 800 at 1:57.07

Neither Dalton Wenner nor Rilee Matalino medaled in the 2A 800, but both gave good accounts of themselves. Wenner, who broke the Cranberry record in the District 9 meet, ran 1:57.07 for 11th place. His splits were 57.73/59.35. Matalino, Oil City sophomore, was clocked in 2:00.36 for 23rd. Blake Glass of Ft. LeBoeuf was the winner in 1:53.08.

Two locals won medals in the state track meet, both from Cranberry -- Darien Wenner in the pole vault and Shane Clark (pictured here) in the javelin.

of note...

Corry's Blake Cook repeated as 2A 110 hurdles champ. He ran a 14.08. He also won 300s in 37.25.

Sprint showdowns flop

  • Defending champion Vinnie Feliciano (Mercyhurst) settled for fifth in the 2A 100; Ft. LeBoeuf's Kc Wasiulewski was seventh. Feliciano's time was 10.96. Deakyn DeHoet of Beth Center won in 10.51. The D-10 guys split two previous meetings this season.

  • DeHoet  won the 200 in 21.29. Brookville's Hayden Freeman was second in 21.65. Wasiulewski was fourth (22.01) and Feliciano was eighth (22.73).

Boys 2A 1600 relay results

1. Catasauqua 3:23.37

2. Warrior Run 3:24.04

3. Quaker Valley 3:24.62

4. Clarion 3:25.99

5. United 3:26.86

6. Notre Dame Green Pond 3:27.35 (including 47.67 leadoff leg)

7. Sharon 3:29.82

8. Hughesville 3:30.35

Hughesville, that quaint little town in NE Pa. that looks like anything but a track/athletic powerhouse, claimed three of the six relays -- the boys and girls 3200 and girls 400. The Spartans were second in the girls 1600, eighth in the boys race. They false-started in the boys 400.

Team champs

Shenango beat Hughesville out for the girls 2A team title, 40-39.

But the closest race for the team title was 3A boys where LaSalle College (Philly) edged Grove City, 40-39.5.

Quaker Valley won 2A boys with 47 points. Ft.LeBoeuf  was runner-up with 39 and Corry (the hurdler/ and Atha in the javelin ) tied Danville for third at 27.

Lancaster McCaskey was 3A girls champ.

HOW THEY DID AT STATES, DAY 1

2A Girls 1600 -- 11. Beatrice Kolesar, school record 5:09.01 (her old mark 5:13.72)

Baylee Espinosa of Lewisburg repeat champ, running 4:53.81

2A Boys Javelin -- 8. Shane Clark tossed 174-11 on the fourth of his six throws and earned a state medal. Ethan Reed of Southern Columbia won (219-2). Corry's Landon Atha was fourth at 184-5. â€‹

2A Boys Long Jump -- 13. Cole Findlay's best jump was 21-11/4. Winner was 22-51/2.

3A Boys Shot -- 14. Logan Knight threw 52-93/4 and didn't make the finals. Both of his local rivals did. DeLathian Boanes of Grove City placed  second (60-10/14) and Brennan Dinsmore of Meadville was seventh (55-51/2).  Top throw: 63-81/2. No. 9 put (and a ticket to the finals) was a makable (for Knight) 55-1/4.

2A Boys High Jump -- Findlay finished 15th, clearing 6-0, but missing three times at 6-2. Hayden Freeman of Brookville was third, clearing 6-4 before bowing out at 6-5. Two were left at that height, but both missed three times at 6-6.

2A Boys 400 -- Morris Woodhouse ran a 51.65, which isn't a bad time, but pretty ordinary if it's in the state meet. Woodhouse was last in his heat and finished 27th. Titusville's Aaron Burrows was in the same heat, but his time, 50.38, was only good for 10th on the day, so he missed the finals, too.

2A Boys 1600 Relay -- There will be no showdown between neighboring school districts Oil City and Cranberry. Both finished middle-of-the-road in Friday's prelims. Oil City was 16th in 3:29.48 and Cranberry was 22nd in 3:32.72. The Oilers were still under the school record that was in the books when the season began. The top eight will be in Saturday's finals, and the first three are the heralded schools from northeastern Pa., Catasauqua, Warrior Run and Hughesville, followed by Clarion and Sharon.  Catasauqua ran a 3:24.57. The next three were in the 3:26s and Sharon was at 3:28.09.

Cranberry senior Shane Clark takes his place on the medals stand after coming out of nowheresville this season to gain eighth place (and a medal) in the 2A state javelin. (Facebook)

ALSO OF NOTE

2A Boys 100 -- Kc Wasiulewski of Ft. LeBoeuf (10.77) and Mercyhurst's Vinnie Feliciano (10.87) are only the sixth and seventh seeds for the finals. Feliciano is defending state champion. He was beaten earlier this season by the FLB speedster, but avenged that loss at the D-10 meet. Top seed for Saturday's state finals at 10.68 is Deakyn DeHoet of Beth Center. Ten sprinters were under 11 seconds in the prelims, including Brookville's Hayden Freeman at 10.96.

2A boys discus -- Titusville's  Lane Ongley was fourth (158-8) and Mason Friedman of Ft. LeBoeuf was third (163). Winning throw was 168-5.

ABOUT THIS SITE

If you are from Anywhere, USA, and happened to stumble upon this site, Franklin and Oil City are about eight miles apart along Route 8 in Venango County, Pa. -- which is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie in the western part of the state.

yardsandpoints.com (formerly venangofootball.com and then route8rivalry.com) covers the grid doings of Oil City and Franklin high schools in Venango County. It also includes the football histories of the two schools, which date back to 1896, along with that of (RIP) Venango Catholic (nee Christian and formerly St. Joseph in Oil City), which dropped the sport in the 1990s. I've recently included more stuff on basketball as well as the doings in other sports.
