Snell vs. Marchibroda

Once upon a time, in the mid-50s actually, The News-Herald had a sports writer named Jake Highton.

Highton was a native of Doylestown (near Philadelphia, heaven forbid), who received his journalism degree from Penn State, and landed a job at The Derrick before becoming sports editor of The News-Herald.

Highton wrote a column that appeared in the Jan. 31, 1957, edition of the Herald  -- soon after Chuck Snell's eligibility was used up -- daring to mention Snell in the same breath as  Marchibroda, who was first team all-state in basketball (but, strangely,  nothing in football).

Anyhow, Highton, who never saw Marchibroda play anything in high school, thought "bad boy" Snell should be placed on the same athletic level as  the beloved Marchibroda. Heresy! As in, you know, Snell was pretty good, too.

Here are the two columns, the original and a second after he was "attacked" by the "Marchibroda Fan Club." Funny stuff here.

ABOUT THIS SITE

If you are from Anywhere, USA, and happened to stumble upon this site, Franklin and Oil City are about eight miles apart along Route 8 in Venango County, Pa. -- which is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie in the western part of the state.

yardsandpoints.com (formerly venangofootball.com and then route8rivalry.com) covers the grid doings of Oil City and Franklin high schools in Venango County. It also includes the football histories of the two schools, which date back to 1896, along with that of (RIP) Venango Catholic (nee Christian and formerly St. Joseph in Oil City), which dropped the sport in the 1990s. I've recently included more stuff on basketball as well as the doings in other sports.
